EXCLUSIVE Interview: Television vet Brainy Smurf!

It was a crisp morning in San Francisco and I sipped on a hot cider as I waited for my guest inside beatnik bar Vesuvio. He was running late, and as he shuffled in the door it was clear that time hadn’t been kind–his coke-bottle glasses slipping down, his tattered white hat now more the color of an eggshell, now more miniature then ever. A bit of a hermit since leaving Smurf Village, Brainy put down his text books and turned to prose–rambling, quixotic narratives that have launched Brainy into the literary spotlight.
Cole Stratton: Thanks for taking the time, Brainy.
Brainy Smurf: No problem. I’m a big fan of the blog.

Blue Paradise Smurf Fair – Sunday 8th Nov 2009

October 30th, 2009

blue paradiseflyer2009 The Leyselle sisters, Michelle and Veronique, are once more putting on their international smurf fair in Ghent, Belgium. Smurf collectors from near and far gather together to peruse the lovely selection of smurf’s available. The fair to be held on Sunday the 8th of November, 2009 runs from 9am to 3pm and entry is free.

The sisters have been running this fair for a few years now and it has always been a success. Many a rare smurf are to be found at the fair as well as other smurfy toys such as puzzles, playsets and writing accessories. They usually have a “special” guest visit – of the smurfy variety. These oversized costumed characters are a big hit. To view pictures of last year’s fair pop by for a visit of the sister’s site here:

Mystery Smurf Toy #1

October 24th, 2009

smurf village

This is a smurf item I happened to stumble upon on eBay back in Nov, 2005. I vaguely remember that the seller was from Italy. And there ends the information I have on this piece.

It looks like it’s ceramic and I think it’s possible that it’s handmade.

I’ve never seen anything like it since and would be glad of any information anyone has on it.

Toy of the Week – 2009 Schönwald Sockel – Papa Smurf in Tuxeo

October 10th, 2009

The Schönwald smurf-a grams are part of a series produced by Schönwald, a spa and resort located in the famed “Black Forest” of Germany as part of a promotion. This year they have released a smurf-a-gram with the Papa Tuxedo figure on top. The Papa Tuxedo (2.0556) smurf toy figure itself was released by Schleich in 2008 as party of their 50th anniversary smurf release.

The sad news however is that this may be the last smurf-a-gram Schönwald will produce. Schönwald are disillusioned with the fact that many buyers of the figures buy them simply to resell them for a profit on eBay so have suggested that this may be the last lot. I’m really hoping it won’t be.

SDC11709What an exciting week it must be for fellow Aussie smurf collector, Brad Cox. He’s already had his first tv debut on Adelaide’s Today Tonight’s Kooky Collectors segment which aired on July 2nd, 2009. But this week he will also be delighting listeners on SAFM and NSW airways. The highlight of the week though must be his appearance on this Friday night’s The Collectors on the ABC at 8pm.

Brad will be showcasing his amazing smurf collection and talking about how he came to start collecting smurfs. He’s been collecting smurfs since childhood and this year will also be fulfilling a dream of his; to attend the Blue Paradise Smurf Fair on 8th November 2009 in Belgium.

Can’t wait to see the show. If you’re in Australia and have some time on Friday night I’m sure it will be worth a watch.

The Northside Library in Kenosha, Wisconsin held it’s third annual sidewalk chalk contest last Saturday 29th Aug, 2009 and surprisingly smurfs were a feature. The theme of this year’s contest was “Animals in Literature”.

The Hill family’s love of smurfs were their inspiration according to 6 yr old Lacy, “It’s our favorite thing to do,” she said. “This is our first time drawing the Smurfs, and we love the Smurfs.” Lacy, along with brother and her father, Scott, entered the competition in the group category. Their colourful piece consisted of a smurf village complete with Papa smurf and a few of his followers.

In the end the family weren’t amongst the place getters. The group category was won by Monique Rosete and Laura Mylar, both 20 of Kenosha for their whimsical reproduction of the Chesire Cat depicted in “Alice in Wonderland.”

Newsflash – Smurf Movie Delayed

September 14th, 2009

Well it looks like it’s bad news. The smurf movie has been put on the backburner until US summer 2011 according to Cinema Apparently Sony is considering July 2011 as there will be less competition. Probably not a bad move on their part.

I must say this little quip from Cinema Blend, speaking about the competition factor, made me smile: “That, of course, is likely to change, but regardless, it was a smart move on Sony’s part to keep the film out of the December 17th free-for-all. Blue clashes with red and green anyway.”

Blue clashes with red and green…..classic 😉

Turn Yourself Blue – for diehard smurfs fans

September 12th, 2009

papasmurfguyWell I would’ve thought it impossible but apparently you can turn yourself blue. A 58 yr old man, Paul Karason, used a silver compound to treat a bad case of dermatitis over 10 years ago. The result was a Papa Smurf lookalike.

Mr Karason has been self medicating and making his own preparations of the Colloidal silver; which is a suspension of silver in a liquid, usually distilled water. It was used thousands of years ago for its antibacterial properties but been replaced by penicillin in modern times. It was banned by the FDA in 1999 as it causes argyria.

“I’m in a place right now where it’s very difficult for me to make my own, and my resources are limited and it’s very expensive” he told the host of the NBC’s Today Show.

He also said: ‘[My skin] has lightened up, it is not major but it is lightening up. I am actually going to try green.’

Painting yourself blue seems a much better, not to mention safer, option to me. 🙂
